Title
Publishing research in top-tier North American and European journals: What’s the difference?
Abstract
All of us are under pressure to publish our research in the very best journals in our field. Because of this, every year, journals receive a huge number of submissions, which means acceptance rates are very low, sometimes as little as 5% or 6% of submissions to top-tier journals end up being accepted for publication. This seminar will discuss some of the reasons why submissions get rejected and a few accepted. It will cover both empirical and conceptual research papers. It will focus on how North American journals tend (but not always) to adopt different stances to European journals (again, not always) on common areas such as: what the expectations of the journal are, how to structure the paper, what qualitative research means, what language styles should be used, how citations are employed, what is regarded as ‘science’, how critical they are, what sort of cover letter to write, how to respond to reviewers if you receive a revise and resubmit and, crucially, what counts as a contribution. I will share some thoughts based on my experience of publishing in (and getting rejected from) journals in North America and in Europe and offer some tips for how to increase your chances of success.
